THERE ARE PLENTY of people out there who’ll ask if it’s a slow news day when any news item relating to the Kardashians manages to make it to the headlines.
However, these people should take a moment to consider what the news looked like in 1988 before the internet was widely available and celebrities weren’t providing us with daily entertainment and drama on social media.
30 years ago, RTÉ News covered a pretty strange (but admittedly wholesome) segment about 11-year-old Deirdre Murtagh in Cloghan, Westmeath who used to ride her 9-month-old cow around Mullingar when she needed to pick up a few groceries.
Deirdre explained to RTÉ News:
Daddy bought her as a suckling calf and she used to come in every morning to suck the cows and I brought her from there. I used to pet her.
She then explained that her friends who see her on Betsy the cow’s back “don’t believe it”.
There are many, many questions that come to mind here. Where is Deirdre Murtagh now? She’s 41 years old now at this stage. What became of Betsy? How did this clip manage to make it to the news? And reappear on RTÉ Archives 30 years later? Who knows. You can watch the full clip here.
